Title: Operation - BMW
Post by: Chauncey on May 06, 2010, 10:17:46 PM
As some of you know, and some of you don't, my wanna be "hotrod" project is a 1985 BMW 325e.  I've had it for 6 years now as it was given to me as a college graduation present, back in the day.  It's been sitting under a tarp for the last 5-6 years and earlier this spring, with some encouraging from my "brothers", it was finally unveiled to the world.  The project is officially underway, but thanks to getting back to work and spring being the busiest time for my job, I've been working weekends for the past month or so.  Although keeping busy with work has allowed me to get some of the financial stuff squared away and I'll be able to actually buy things for the project now, so that's a plus!

Anywho, here she is:

And here's the "story":

Our family's old pastor from North Branch purchased the car sometime in the late 90's I believe from a dealer in Forest Lake.  It was (and still is) a pretty snazzy looking little guy.  He drove it for a while I guess until a few mechanical things went haywire and he couldn't, or chose not to, keep up with the little repairs all the time.  So he basically gave it to my dad in exchange for some services around the house, or something like that.  Anywho, it's been in our family for a number of years now.  I drove it to school a few times while I was attending Mora.  However, my dad's ex-gf drove it for the most part.  I'm not sure if it had always run rough or not, but I don't think I've personally ever driven it under full power.  It seemed to always have a miss or something and just never seemed right.  All I remember is that it was pretty darn quick for a car that wasn't 100%.

So the ex-gf used it as a daily driver for a year or so I think.  Meanwhile running it dangerously low, if not empty, on oil.  Not once, but twice.  Needless to say, it fried the rings (and probably other things), or so we think, as the engine that was in it had almost no compression at all.  And the auto tranny that was attached to it had a main seal go out I guess, so that needed to be fixed or replaced as well.  So while it was running, this tranny seal that went bad caused countless amounts of ATF to leak/spray all over the bottom of the car.  Sounds cruddy, but I think it actually kept most of the car from rusting, which is nice.

So my dad and I found an engine and tranny combo on eBay that was located near Cleveland, OH.  It was the same size engine and car, only it had a 5-spd attached to it.  We scored it for a good price and made a road trip out to get it.  Took his Ford Ranger with a snowmobile trailer behind and drove straight there and straight back, taking turns driving and snoozing.  We now had basically everything we needed to get the car running and back to life.  Unfortunately, I dove into it head first, but with my eyes closed.  I started way too many small projects on it and got overwhelmed fast.  And this was all before even attempting the motor swap.

I failed miserably.  And then it sat.  For 6 years.  Until now.

I'll end you so fast.

Hey, how about if/when we get the spare straight-six back in, and banking on it actually running, we line up our straight-sixes and see what happens.  Can't race BMW and SHO anymore, so it might as well be the Granada GT!  Haha.

So, almighty wise one (Papa Chaunce), here's my dilemma:

Of course after photoshopping them I also like the black the best.  However, these rims are like 6-7 years old and are somewhat hard to find.

I can get the red ones and the yellow ones in a 4x100 bolt pattern (for the BMW), but the black ones are only available in a 5 bolt.  Or at least that's what's left.

So, I was talking to Randy about it and was thinking I could just buy 4 of the red ones in the correct bolt pattern and paint over the red parts.  I'd have to mask off all of the brushed aluminum parts of course, but I could then make them any color I want, right?  Is there any special paint that I'd need to use on wheels?  I know that aluminum requires powedercoating or anodizing, but if they're already painted I'd assume I can just cover that existing paint with some black.

Confused yet?  Hopefully not.  Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

Scored it for cheap at a thrift store.  Figured I'd keep my regular clothes clean and wear that.  And look cool at the same time, of course.  Gonna get some NCH patches on it or something.

Anybody ever had experience with hub adaptors?  Not just spacers, but actual adaptors.  4-lug to a 5-lug?  I know it's probably some risky business, but I think the 4X100 pattern on this old beast will limit my choice of wheels.  And with my latest score on some sweet tires, I'm probably going to change my "plan" when it comes to wheels for this thing.

Here's a link to a place I found online.  Sells all sorts of bolt pattern adaptors, like 4x100 to 4x108 and stuff, and then I found this one which changes it from 4x100 to 5x114.3 (4.5").

http://www.ezaccessory.com/Wheel_Adapter_4_Lug_100_To_5_Lug_4_5_p/4100-5450b.htm

I can already guess that the extra width these will add to the hub as a whole would be a problem, as it would force the wheels out a little ways.  And with the wider tires I bought, I can only imagine they'd be rubbing like a mofo.  Time to roll some fenders, I guess.

Otherwise, I've been trying to research ways to convert these 4-lugs to a 5-lug by swapping out the hubs themselves.  The BMW M3 of this era has 5-lug wheels, and apparently the rear hubs are almost a straight swap.  The fronts are a little more difficult, but still fairly do-able.

Holy canoly.  Just started searching eBay and found some GNARLY direct bolt up wheels for this thing.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290456931764&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en

Roughly $600 shipped.  They're staggered wheels so the front ones are a little narrower, and the back ones are a little wider and have a deeper dish.  The fat tires would for sure fit the back ones, but I'm guessing not the fronts.  Hmm...

Maybe find some tires that fit the front and just have a bunch of fat tires for the rear to burn off...

Haha.  That's what I was thinking!  I'd think a pair on the front would last for a while.  Not like I'd be putting 10,000 miles a year on it or anything crazy.  And rears would just be swappable.

First I think that BMW Heart transplant needs to commence. How about that for a brotherly saturday project? Bring your bro up ??? at least get the wireing harness figured out on the good one and get the motor unbolted / out of the way. That way we can at least look at the clutch setup and start cuttin some holes if need be.

Post by: Chauncey on August 02, 2010, 04:25:56 PM
Let me run it past the bro.  Maybe I could talk them into gettin' up early and making things happen.  He'd get to see the NCH HQ, and we'd get to take advantage of another set of hands and guns.  I'm sure he'd be down to sweat a little.  Momma Chaunce can meet her other daughter-in-law and Papa Chaunce can meet the other son he really wish he didn't have.

Maybe do a little grilling, too?  I'll bring the High Life in trade for your assistance.  Maybe Ry-dawg would be down to party if I brought enough.

If this goes down, you better bring your "booties".  crap's gonna get DEEP!

Yeah, she's been sour for quite some time.  And it's this coming weekend.  Most likely Saturday only.  My bro and his wife are rolling in sometime Thursday.  Staying through Sunday cuz my mom's flying in from New Zealand late Saturday evening.  Confused yet?  Good.

So anywho, we'll probably hang out up there Saturday morning 'til late afternoon and then head back to the cities to pick her up from the airport.  Can probably have a little fun with the thing and maybe even make some progress.  We'll see.  If anything I'm sure we'll at least have a good time making fun of each other and crackin' bad jokes.

Word on the street is my (actual) bro-ski is coming in sometime tomorrow, hopefully early afternoon.  Gonna stay at my dad's tomorrow night and most of Friday, I guess, while I'm taking care of business with the wedding stuff.  Then I think they're crashing at our place Friday night so we can get a decent start on Saturday morning.  Will try my/our best to get up and at 'em first thing.

As far as drinks go for y'all, I'm thinkin' a 12-er of High Life (Orvis boys), a 6-er of PBR (Farmboy), and a 6-er of Busch Light (my real bro).  Anybody have anything else in mind?  If it's alright with you Krandall, I'll use your cooler since I've still got it here.  Perhaps I can pick up some dogs or something, too?  Up to you guys, I guess.  I'm willing to supply whatever for those involved in making something happen.  Really hoping things go smoothly so there's not too much cussin'.  Fingers crossed!

Workin' on that jug of orange juice?  You worked it pretty good, I'd say.

PS - Chaunce.  What's the trick to getting the clickable thumbnails for the pictures?  It's kinda of a pain to scroll down for five minutes when there are so many full size pics.

i really don' know how it works for sure. i take pic's with my phone send it to my e-mail, copy and past from my e-mail to my photos section on my computer, then when i post i click the additional options... and click browes then select a photo and wala.

Hmm.  5.0 V8 or 2.5 I6  ???

Neither right now...  We'll have to get a day or two to rock that pos into the red rocket and see what happens.  With a little luck we'll be spraying gravel all over those ditches up there.  crap's gonna get pretty serious if that thing fires up.  Brings a tear to my eye just thinkin' about it.  Well, not really, but it might happen when the time comes.  Been a long time comin'.

The 302 Ranger vs 2.5 Bimmer? I'm not down with pinks just yet, but I'll definitely be game to throw down some drag action, at least for braggin' rights (either way).  Give me a chance to see what I'm workin' with.  You gonna run a stick or an auto in that thing?

PS- I'm can pretty much guarantee you'll be done working on yours first.  Or at least have it "race ready".

sure I do have a few sets of heads so theres enough to go around.  But yeah if any of you want to build a roller stroker I have block that I would give up you would just have to buy the kit then.

My dad and I are going to look at a bad ass welder today.  Put a bug in the ear of our mechanic at work the other day and he immediately got on the handle with his brother.  His brother use to work for a welding/machining shop and knew of a couple welders they bought for one job and I think haven't used them since.  Either way, it's supposedly in awesome condition and we're gonna check it out.  Also starting on running 220 to the garage today.

Might be moving "Operation - BMW" to the Forest Lake area for the winter...  :batman:

Now all I gotta do is get my bro-ski to pull that 302 from the Galaxie, and also find myself a T5 tranny from a Mustang and then it's only a matter of time until the fecal matter comes into contact with the rotary air motivator.

Guessing that's the case.  I 'spose it's time to try to unload it and get some money to put towards the hot rod project then, eh?   ???

Made some progress on the welder operation today:

Dug a trench, laid some pipe, ran some wire.  Almost done with that end of it, now just gotta get the welder end wrapped up, which sounds like it'll be a go in the next couple days.   :woot:

So there's a set of cellar doors on the side of the house and a big rectangular hole dug into the ground where a set of stairs go down into the basement.  The stairs are junk, but the hole is all supported with concrete blocks.  My dad came up with a sweet idea of tearing the crappy stairs out, replacing them with some new, more sensible ones, and also making them easily removeable.  The goal, for him, is to be able to take the stairs out, then insert a big piece of steel channel, and gracefully roll his motorcycles down in to the basement for the winter.  He'll be able to work on them in the warmth of the basement on not have to heat the whole garage to do so.

So you know what that means.  Add one more steel channel ramp, build a cart/stand with some decent sized wheels, and we'll be rolling a motor, tranny, etc. downstairs as well.  Best of all, the room that's immediately accessed by this side door has work benches around 3/4 of the walls, and instead of putting regular paneling up they used pegboard on the ENTIRE thing.  Gotta get a stereo in there now and we'll be good to go.

Found a pretty rad one for sale.  Not interested, just cool for the sake of looking at it.  Maybe a wee bit too much red/black going on, but kinda cool nonetheless.  My favorite part is the euro-plate on the front.  For those non-euro fans here, E30 is the chassis code for these things.

I think I'd put a cowl like that on the Taurus before the Bimmer.    Gonna attempt to go for somewhat of a sleeper look, other than the ridiculous sound coming from the exhaust of course.  Found a T5 tranny and some sweet black leather BMW seats up at Baxter's yesterday.  Gonna try to score the tranny this Friday before the meeting.  He's only got one left and I don't wanna lose it.  Seats will probably have to wait for right now.

Found an awesome site lastnight with an ace-load of info about V8 swaps.  Seriously hit a jackpot with this one.  http://e30v8.com/

Also, some guy's huge, in-depth build thread on one of the Bimmer forums. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1496109

All of this searching also lead me to some sweet videos on YouTube.  Check 'em!

Turned a couple wrenches on this thing yesterday, doing some very minor work.  Otherwise spent a little time cleaning everything out of it and preparing for when I have an income and can actually do something to it.  Anywho, got all the crap outta the trunk and the inside as well as the huge blue bin of crap from the engine bay.  Thing's ready for some loving, just need some money to love it with.

Also found a little more cancer on the inside than I was hoping for, but it's not like it's the first MN hotrod to have peep holes in the floor by your feet.  Heck, maybe I'll route some tubing underneath to scoop in the air from the road.  Nothing like a little forced induction cabin cooling.  Nothing too major, but can see through a few little spots.  Gonna have to take some rust repair classes from Ry-dawg when the time comes.  I know how much he loves patching rust.
