So, time for a little update for anybody that doesn't know.

Got motor and tranny in and running.  Thing was stumbling a little cuz the 850 was a little too big for the basically stock motor.  Ordered a 600 Holley online on Cyber Monday.  Matt suggested we take care of the gas tank issue before subjecting the brand new carb to an early death-via-rust.

So, pulled the tank a couple weeks ago and found a little something inside...

Plan started out as we were just gonna clean it out best we could and call it a day.  Then figured we'd never be able to get all of it out of there as we had the filler neck opening and the sending unit opening to enter in.  Started looking for a replacement one online, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.  Couldn't even find one.  Next option was to bend one up at work and make it myself.  Was pumped on that but we'd be limited to 4' wide, unless I wanted to splice it in the middle, but then that's just that much more welding that has to be perfect.  Plus we'd be limited to about 15 gallon capacity.  440 + huge-big-mongous-truck / 15 gallons of gas =  ???

So last night Matt says "Why don't we just cut a big hole in it, blast all the crap out, then weld it back shut."  So that's what I did today.  There was one big spot on the tank that was about 5" by 15" or so.  Cut that rectangle out and blasted the  out of the inside.  Rust was so bad on those end parts (above) that it left some pin holes all over the ends.  So, went up to "work" today and snuck some scraps of sheetmetal, cut some patches on the shear, then went back and welded the beast up.  Got it in my trunk so we can leak test it at work tomorrow.

Also - put the new carb on last night as well.  Put the sending unit down into a gas can for the time being just to hear it run.  Thing purrs like a kitty and has some pretty nice snap off idle.  Sounds a lot better than before.  Can't wait to get the thing back together and take 'er for a spin around the yard.  Hopefully we don't get stuck with the one wheel wonder.

Lastly, after pulling the back seat out to get the tank out, I found a TON of dirt/rust/dead bugs/etc under the carpet in the back so I started cleaning all that crap out.  Pulled the front seat yesterday to do the same up there.  Found a LOT more surface rust and one spot right in the middle of the floor where it's broken through.  :help: Gonna bend up a little something for a quick patch tomorrow at work and gonna throw it on, put the carpet back down, and forget about it.   :batman:

Super short version - making progress!  Woot woot!

Also, a guy from work is one of those weirdos that's obsessed with diesels... ???

Anywho, brings in this diesel lover's magazine last week and blows my mind.  One of my ideas put to real life with the help of an unlimited budget.  Oh to win the lottery someday...

I'm not a huge fan of everything they've done to it, but for the most part, this thing is effin' sweet.  Basically what I'd want to do to this thing if money was no object - sweet old body on modern chassis.

Some articles I found quick.  Can probably find better ones if you want to look into it more.

Making more progress, although it's gradually becoming slower.

Started into some wiring today.     is it a nightmare.  Guessing it's all original but there's misc. stuff added in here and there, and modified, and spliced, and lengthened, and , and , etc.

Love being overly anal about wiring.  Hard for me to stop once I get started. At least the engine bay will be neat and tidy when I'm done with it.  Just do me a favor and don't look under the dash...

Boss man's LP tank ran out again and he said he's not filling it for a third time.  Looks like I'll be sitting on my hands at home for a little while... :(
