Alrighty, folks. I'm sittin' here doing a whole lot of nothing and figured I'd try to do something "productive" and get the word out for our latest new thing. This summer/fall will be our first attempt at holding some valve cover drag races. They will held at the 5th Annual Hillbilly Carshow in Braham. To those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, it's just like the pine wood derby the boy scouts do, only your block of wood is now a valve cover (see sample pics below).
The track will be built by Team Chauncey Racing, a division of The NCH. Meaning, myself and Krandall. We haven't come up with a "concrete" idea for the track, but I think it'll be something like this: a plywood ramp with sides and a divider. The track will have two lanes, like a standard drag strip. There will be some sort of starting mechanism that will allow both racers to be released at the same time. It'll most likely be something sticking up from the bottom of the track that will flip forward and out of the way. Therefore, we probably can't have anything mounted on the "front" of the racers (see rules below). As far as size goes, originally we were thinking 4' wide plywood, making each lane 2' wide. However, after checking out several things online, I'm thinking we'll probably make it narrower (gotta confer with the brother on this one). One, for cost of materials. Two, for weight of materials. We'll see what happens.
Lastly, this was Les' idea a couple years ago and if I remember right, his only two rules at the time were 1) It has to be an American-made valve cover and 2) There will be a weight limit of 10 lbs. (for racing). Wheels can be made of pretty much anything you can think of, I guess. Skateboard wheels, toy truck wheels, RC car wheels. Who knows.
Speaking of which, I'm thinking we'll have two awards. One for fastest racer, determined by the drag racing, and one for Best of Show. Maybe the best of show won't have a weight limit? We'll see. Again, this is just me talking right now and I'll have to run this all by the other Chaunce to make final decisions.
Anywho, sample pics:

RULES
These are now the "official" rules. It's possible that they might change slightly, or even be added to, but if we do I'll be sure to notify people by creating a new post in the thread. My personal opinion on the rules is this: they're there so that it's a basis of what to go by, but not so much that it can't still be fun. I personally encourage and would like to see whatever people can bring to the table. The crazier the better.
The Cars:
-No engines or propulsion.
-No moving weights.
-Wheels can be attached to the car in any manner, but must not extend beyond the front of the valve cover.
-Nothing can extend beyond the front of the valve cover. (Due to the starting mechanism, and to make sure they start at the same place.)
-Cars shall be based on an actual rocker cover from an automobile engine.
-Cars must have four wheels, each no more than six inches in diameter. (Thinking about deleting this one. Thoughts?)
Critical Dimensions:
-30 inch maximum overall car length. (This figure is up in the air, depending on feedback I receive from you guys. However, 20" is pretty dang big already!)
-10 inch maximum overall car width, including axles/wheels. (Due to the width of each lane.)
-No height restrictions (within reason, of course). This is a personal "non-rule" because I'm secretly hoping somebody builds one to look like a pirate ship. Hint hint.
-10 pounds maximum weight by official scales.

TRACK
The track construction is well underway and is coming along quite nicely. Have a few tweaks to make in order to get walls and stuff to line up perfectly, but it'll come. Also going to paint it and hopefully add some flair. 5th year for the NCH show and 1st year for the races, so we gotta do it big.
Track dimensions:
2' overall width
10 1/2" lane width (width varies slightly due to the lumber, so car width will be MAX of 10", just to make sure they go down all the way)
24' of race track w/ 8' of stopping lane
We didn't think to take any pictures, but I'll try to next time. It actually looks a lot like this one right now, just a little narrower. And ours will have 3 sections raised/angled with 1 flat one at the end.
Close to final product:

MISC.
This post will be reserved for any other misc. info we need to share with people, as well as adding in thought/opinions/suggestions we get from everybody else. Things will be posted here to keep it all in one place, mainly for our own sake to keep our "notes" in order.
Having said that, feel free to provide us with some input/ideas!
nice homework number 3 gittner dun 8)
awesome! id better get to work!!
Anybody planning on participating in this thing? Randy and I had a pretty stellar meeting of the minds tonight at my place. Came up with some awesome ideas for both our racer(s) and our show cover. It's getting way too legit. These things are gonna be frickin' sweet!
i hava a super fast turbo 2.3 valve cover that i can chop into
Git er done!
i got a super fast chrome 2.3 valve cover myself
eroting aluminum is way faster than chrome
i dont know
I would bet Hackler's will run there's again on an "official" track.
as of now. There will be 2 trophies.
1 - Best of Show
1 - Fastest Valve Cover
I cant wait for this!!
Should be pretty cool and fun!
Hope y'all are making progress on your little (or big) racers! We made a substantial amount of progress on the entire situation this weekend. Got the majority of the track construction knocked out in one afternoon up at the Hillbilly HQ. It's 2' wide, probably gonna be a 24' long racing area with an 8' section added on for the stopping area, so 32' overall. It's a lot bigger than I thought it'd be once we set it up and you're standing right next to it, but I think it's gonna be awesome.
We used 1x4's for the outside walls of the track, and a 2x2 running down the middle to divide the lanes. Gonna try to get it painted up like a dragstrip and make it look all official like. My idea as of now is to paint the track surface black and have the walls be white, such as any normal race track you'd see. Maybe paint on a track name in black letters, just cuz. Then, when cars bounce off the walls going down there'll be all sorts of scuffs/scrapes/scratches that we can leave on there and hopefully add to the whole race feel. Oh yeah, and if your racer blows a rod or something through the oil pan, don't be a NOOB and keep driving straight down the middle of the track. Pull it off to the side!
I made a test car out of a small chunk of scrap wood and some of Randy's old skateboard wheels, and Les had a gigantic old Chevy valve cover that we strapped down onto it to make a few passes. It worked out quite nicely. Got a few things to tweak here and there, but we're definitely on the right track. Pun totally intended. Also, after the master chief called it a night, Krandall and I whipped out our secret weapon(s) and got to work designing/building/testing our first prototype racer. Thing's gonna be rad. Definitely got us both a bit excited and giddy even tho it was nearing 130 AM and we were both quite sleepy. And yes, I said giddy. That's what all of you will be shouting when your racers are falling behind: "Giddy up!" Haha.
Look for some info in the "TRACK" and "RULES" section to be updated soon. Had a few ideas for rules and the dimensions of the track/lanes will come into play when making the sizing restrictions for the racers.
Important Notice
By the way, for those of you that are planning to participate, please please please, if you're going to use some giganticly long valve cover, let me know how long it is as soon as you can. The length of the longest valve cover will determine the length of our starting area. If nobody chimes in with a figure, we'll just have to implement a certain number and include it into the rules.
As of now, we're able to be pretty flexible as we haven't begun construction on the starting mechanism. However, once we do so, there'll be a set maximum length that it will be able to handle.
This sweet Im onboard for sure. I will have to measure the width of my racer. It maybe to wide not so sure yet but it will fit the lenght. I cant want to see how this turns out. Anyone have any pics of theres yet?
farmboys brother got us a couble valvecovers off of one of these will it work
Sure thing, Tink. But where the hell is it on this thing?
i think its on the other side
i hope it aint too heavy
I think if you port it, you can drop some weight.
Porting works on alot of things... i ported the chaincase on a snowmobile once.. worked awesome!! ALSO Just tonight i ported my water pump and oil pan on the truck! Must have shaved at least 1.3 lbs!!
PORT IT ALL!
I heard if you port the gas tank you can drop a ton of weight! Get at that next.
Got mine ready to roll! A few minor deets and im all set!
Made a TON of progress on the track this weekend. Will be uploading pics later today.
Got 95% of the construction done, as well as painting the whole thing. Realistically we could run 'em as is, but we've got some sweet ideas in the "added flair" category that we're gonna try to pull off. In the end this thing's gonna be frickin' awesome.
Hope everybody's making some progress on their racers. Only 3 more weeks 'til race/show time!
NOTICE
We made the starting section this weekend, as well as 95% of the track. The length from the very end of the track to the starting bars is 32", leaving enough room for the valve covers to be 30" long with a little wiggle room. I'll add this to the "official" rules on the first page as well.

them are sweet!!!!!!! i have a old rust straight 6 235 cover i can use. or is it too long???
oopps i should of read the rules first. ill have to check the langth and maybe short'n it.
I think those will fit. Pretty sure that's what Les has in the shop and I made the first test car out of it. I think Randy measured that one to make sure it'd fit and then we made it just a hair longer, just in case.
Could have Ryan check for sure, but for some reason, I want to say we're good up to a hair longer than 32"
cool thanks guys. i gotta find me some wheels now.
I started doing a little work to Shana's last night well she did most of the work just got the v cover cleaned not the cheaper speed parts can be add. :D

about 10 mins worht of work left on the track, its READY TO ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That and the Orvis crew (and friends) have a pretty gnarly collection of racers showing up. Really excited to see what everybody else brings to the table. Curious to see what other people use for parts. This thing's gonna be a blast.
We got a revised starting mechanism built today complete with a homemade t-handle. Gonna be droppin' 'er into low and doing some smokey burnouts!
Wooo! HooOOOoO! Got another one whipped up today.. the pink one.. its gonna get some fancy stickers and then that ones ready to roll! I cant wait for this!
Just wait 'til you see the fireworks we rigged up for it today. At some random point in the races we're gonna trigger a "crash" followed by a huge fireball inferno of doom. Then we'll send the rest of the cars down the track and see which one makes it out alive.

BRaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
the v cover race was a blast im not gonna lie havent been that nervos in a long time din't think my 10 min build would take 2nd place thanks to the last min curb feelers it went pretty good cant wait tell next year.
the F100 car club is starting a v cover race too i guess, my old boss was telling me he ran in to a guy and was all talk about valve cover racers and how all the guys were building them. steve (my old boss) skooled him about us and the track ya'll built. maybe there will be a show down with VC racers at up coming shows!!!
Heck yeah. Maybe instead of going to see cars people will go to battle valve cover racers. Can't afford to build a big ass gnarly drag car? :( Save money and get braggin' rights on the valve cover track.
That'd be hilarious if we got invited to another show to bring our racers. Definitely not providing the track, tho, unless there's some hefty rental fee included.
You heard it here first dan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:
oh... did anyone by chance get some pics?\
i got a pretty saweeeet trophy :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:
ya ya ya...
we gotta get a picture of the winners car and trophy!
So you mean a picture of Dan's car then, right? ???
Man, really can't wait for next year's already. We really should host a "private" party or something for members only before the summer's over. Maybe a couple more people could whip together a car or two, and the ones who already have them could either make another or make their current one meet the requirements...
I'm frickin' stoked to get started on some more. Picked up 3 different toy cars yesterday while out on the town during the Cambridge city-wide sale, all to just tear them apart and use their cool wheels. Gonna make for some bad ass looking VCR's if I can make things happen. :batman:
Why make a VCR.. why not a Blu Ray player thingy :D ha!
Wowzers... :S
I got 2 of 3 toy cars I bought on Saturday completely torn apart and all of the necessary pieces sourced from them this afternoon. Got 2 kick  sets of wheels for something in the future. One from a Nascar toy and the other from a Grave Digger monster truck. Should make for some good times.
The 3rd "toy" is a 1/5 scale Chrysler 300C r/c car. It's HUGE! 12" wide, about 31" long. It's a "Dropstars" version so it's got LED lights all over it (headlights, tail lights, blinkers, GROUND EFFECTS) plus it's got some wicked chrome wheels, aka DUBS, haha, that are at least 5" in diameter. Saw it from the road and the first thing I thought of was robbing the wheels off of it for a VCR. Long story short, the car still works. Awesomely. Thing's got ground effect lighting while you drive, blinkers flash when you turn it. Best part is it's got a headphone jack in the truck (which opens) and a slot for a portable cd player to go into (or in my case, iPod) and it plays the music through two speakers in the bottom of the car. This thing's frickin' rad. I think the gears in the back that drive the wheels are loose or something, tho. It'll drive fine for a few feet and then slowly stop. You can hear the motors whining in there but they're not engaging. Gonna pop the top off and see if I can't rectify the issue. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be butchering this apart in favor of a valve cover. Well, unless I can find one to just slip on top like I did my monster truck.
BUILD IT AND THEY(who ever they are?) WILL COME
hey chaunce what you think of the dubs on the ranger
I'd have to see it again. ??? Honestly was more focused on the sweet sound I heard coming from the beast. Get yourself a set of Cragar SS's on that thing.
after randy had two sets of cragers and keystones i get bored by them otherwise i would have a set on there
I'm guessing I'm probably the only one around here that's still in the mood/mode to build some VCR stuff. Spent a couple hours tonight tearing some vehicles down to get the "good" parts off, then tossed all the left over crap. Got the dubs off the 300C as well, and they're frickin' awesome. And HUGE! Word on the skreets is that Pchop and I will be teaming up to build the "Donk of Donks". Gonna be called Ri-DONK-ulous. 8)
Here's a little sample for y'all. One of the rims sitting next to a 25' Fat Max...

It's on like DONKey Kong.
nice! like it.
Thats gonna be sweet! I like the idea!!
Im still in the mood.. got a sweet secret idea.. just gotta find the wheels ;)
Cant wait to see yours!
i need a answer from the higher ups on this ,,a dude wants to make a racer out of a tractor valve cover ,,it would still fit into the specks ,,,and the answer is????????????????????
If I'm a higher up, I say heck yeah!
how bout the oither one?????????? krandy????????????????
whos gonna build a tactor one!?!?
a tractor dude ,,perhaps........................ donny m
Anybody around the ranch making a new one for this event? Or still just gonna use the illegal ones? I got a couple sweet ideas, just don't know if I'll have time. Or enough valve covers...
I need a valve cover possibly prior to saturday ;)
If that's directed towards me it's not gonna happen. We're rollin' westbound tomorrow morning before the damn rooster's even awake. Will be back sometime on Saturday, tho. ???
I'll have to make do w/ somethin else then I guess.
Or we can get together when I get back? I got tools and crap at my place. Can at least get it started.
will be easier w/ welder on hand. got some plannz......
i got a couple straight 6 covers here kkkranndall
Made some good progress on my valve cover for the christmas party!
Wait til you see mine... >:-]
I've got some sweet ideas cookin' but I doubt I'll get anything done by the party. Toni's got a pretty sweet idea for hers but would need a welder. And not sure when we'll have time before then and now to make it happen. Don't think mine would need a welder, but still skeptical if I'll get it done by then. Supposed to snow this weekend and if it does my board will be out in full effect. Priorities have officially shifted for the season.
4 coats of primer
and on the 2nd coat of paint...
2 more then a few coats of clear!
Making some progress last minute, of course. What would a Hillbilly valve cover racer be without slamming it together just in the nick of time. Anywho, have decided to go another route with both mine and hers. Still the same overall vision, just taking a few steps to cut a few corners and save a bunch of work. Made a trip to Savers today to round up a couple more supplies. Thinking both of them will look a lot better than they roll, but we'll see. Probably be a bunch of cheaters in attendance anyway.
Good to hear brother-b. :)
win or lose... its all about the liquor filled chocolates!
haha, looks like just about everybody is havin new v covoers this time around! Me included!! ruh Roh!! 8)
It's getting pretty dang close to crunch time and I'm personally nowhere near prepared for this year's running of the racers. I've got so many ideas floating around in the head, but finding the time to sit and make something of them is a completely different story.
Thinking I'll stick with the coolest one and see what I can make of it. Probably ain't gonna roll worth  but that's not what I'm going for. If you're gonna be in last place, you at least gotta look cool, right?
Anywho, was bored at work today while drawing up plans for my racer and found a few cool pictures. Hopefully some motivation and ideas for anybody looking to throw something together quick.

nice cant wait to see it. hopefully i will have another one just for cover count. lol aka car count. i know we have one outside contender. 40 ford frank and im not gonna lie it looks pretty fast and well thought out, but we'll see.
So... I be lookin' for one of them Loooooong straight-6, Chevy valve covers. Ryan was so kind to get me one from Ostrom's a while back and I'm making a racer out of it. However, I'd really like one more as I got another sweet idea up in the brain today.
Would be willing to pay a little for it if I had to, otherwise if you've got one lying around somewhere collecting dust I'll trade ya a 12-pack of your favorite flavor o' beer.
Also, condition doesn't really matter as long as the mounting surface is straight/flat.
well you see i got two and they are comin for you...................... :batman:
:woot: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:
Hahahahaha. :) im going to get a defferent wheel set up for one of mine.. but its a secret on what one tee hee hee
boat anchors work really well for wheels and are really fast it you want a tip .
Well... didn't get EVERYTHING I wanted done this weekend. Made the trophy for the valve cover race. not 100% complete yet.. But, will have it done hopefully tomorrow night.
Helped the wife get started on hers. Just needs a few tweaks and some nice pink (sigh....) paint.
Got started on my next valve cover. it's taking shape. hopefully will have it done next weekend. If anything I'll have a valve cover body to show off :)

Any chance you'd part with one? ???
:batman:
I made a ton of progress on my new one today. Haven't even touched it until today, just had an idea of what I wanted as an end result. After a bit of brainstorming I just grabbed the closest power tools and started cutting stuff. So far everything has just fallen together and stuff is working out on the first try. Hope it keeps up. This thing's gonna be frickin' awesome if I can pull it off.
Almost got 'er done. Here's a preview:

Hmmm, link appears to be broken, you should try again.
Made good progress on the valve cover today.. Not sure if I'll have it there in race form, but it will be there to show off at least! :D
got front wheels for it. now I need to figure something out for the rears.. may have to drill holes in it "temporarily".. eek
wont be painted I've decided, because if I painted it, I'd have to strip it down again.. Air compressor broke down @ the ranch this weekend, so I couldn't finish. its basically there though :)
Also.. Trophy has been created and is all set to go. Question: Do we have access to a scale?
Thinking ahead for future races, if this catches on big time (w/ the public).. Would it make sense to have weight classes?
masons have a scale and eye(like a pirate) just picked one up from boomer
sweet!!!

+1
If you're gonna be in last place on the track, you might as well look good, right? Pretty sure that's where I'll be chillin'.
Got front wheels figured out, will be hittin the hardware store tomorrow. gotta cobble somethin together for some rears. At least gonna try making it roll-able!!
Got my beast 95% wrapped up tonight. Also had to throw one together for the woman quick-like, so that cut into my "fine" tuning time.
Mine rolls, but it ain't pretty...
Did you forget I have access to the forum now?! I'll give you a fine tuning!
P.S. Do we have a best in show award this year?
Sorry, no best in show. Just quickest cover. I didn't have time to make another.. If time permits tonight, maybe I can whip somethin up.
a new icon
I've got a few good ones for the site. Will try to post 'em later.
its later
