Title: "A" build
Post by: pchop on May 26, 2010, 06:39:19 PM
I was thinkin at work today that maybe I should put up some pics of the pickup as I have been working on it.  Since everyone has is it in a rolling state maybe I can show how it came to be.  Ill give a quick run down of what I have used for what and how I did or more so why I did what I did.

The frame-
It is made up of 2"x3" sq. tubing an 1/8" thick.  The cross memeber for the rear controll arms are made up of 2"x2" sq tubing 3/16" thick.  The plan was to build it a little on the light side for the only purpose of an under powered engine.  So the littler the faster Im hoping for the complete car to weigh in around 1900 to 2000 lbs. at most.

The body-
It start life as just a cowl from a 29 A sedan.  The body is all 18 gauge sheet metal.  The floor is made up of 1"x 1" sq tubing not even sure how thick it really is I know it bent fairly easies. Oh well it only has to support my Fat  and maybe one other person.

The Drivetrain-
Its a 265 sbc and a 4spd.  I figure like 150 horse at most so the 4spd should help make it a little more fun to drive.  5000 or 6000 and dump the clutch should make some tire smoke.  The rear axle is out of my shoebox it has 3.45 gears it will work until I find a narrow 9" out of a early bronco. "Farmboy" thats your department.

Anyways Ill get at putting up some pics tonight I hope or in the am for sure

Lucky come on man It was barely steaming.  Now when you can feel the heat 20 mins after you shut it off then it might be "warm".  plus it is a 1956 motor It has been "seasoned" a few times I sure.

You will just have to stop over with it and walk alway she doesnt like to work with people watching.  That goes for anyone who wants some free work.

The start of things to come 18 gauge formed to match the shape of the cowl. You can see the braces that help it keep its shape.  Made a pattern of a door to get the shape

The top of the door and body line so to speak made and tacked on.  Made the top of the door in the break its just 18ga bent into c channel to finish the door top.

Now the back of the cab is being attached.  Its more 18ga, I bent a edge on one end of each to help with strengh and give it something to break it up a bit in the back.  As you can see I starded with a sedan/coupe cowl and went from there.  Its cheaper this way.

A little motor mock up in action.  Chevy 348 and FOUR TWOS if Only I had a running one to use :(

Now on to the frame, as you can see in the pic it has the 265 and 4spd in it already.  I was like 3'' shorter then the 348 so I had to move a few things around since it only has front motor mounts.

Heres a shot of the rear control looks kinda like a chevy.  Its just some 1 3/4 od tube an 1/8 thick.  I was cleaning out some stuff and came acrossed a box of poly bushing I had gotten a few yrs ago.  Score It pays to be a pack rat.

This was my first attempt at a front crossmember.
Just another view of it.  With this crossmember setup the lower radiator outlet would have been between the axle and crossmember which we all know would not work very long.
Title: Re: "A" build

So I switched to this design, which now has the motor mounts and and crossmember all in one.  As you can see the leaf spring has been moved also to behind the axle.  That helped bring the front down a few more inches.  I like this one the best its more easy to work with as far as engine fan and pulleys. The down side is that I had to move the grill and radiator 2" ahead which I dont know if it makes it look funny or not.

I think shana was more excited to see the dash then I was after she picked the color.  Yeah donk would be pretty sweet.

you got it.  i did complete paint on all those stangs. he is builing the chop top. it came with a pro street rod frame i guess. i talked to him a litttle bit he is puttin a stroker 4.6 in it. im sure ill get to paint that one too. he is so picky and dosent wanna pay. im sure hillbilly les knows all about them kind.
Title: Re: "A" build
Post by: 55.ferris on August 14, 2010, 08:11:56 PM
you could paint it a flat color with old skool scallops glossy to match the dash.  or prime or flat color over the dash color and do the patina paint style on it that would be pretty cool too.
Title: Re: "A" build
Post by: pchop on August 15, 2010, 08:04:41 PM
Yeah I thinking a flat of some color.  Maybe gray Im thinking that it would be the best combo.  Black would not look that great and red would make me puke, so I think until I really decide gray is easily cover with any color.  I kinda think a flat of the dash would be cool

Title: Re: "A" build
Post by: pchop on September 20, 2010, 04:37:31 PM
I think an alternater and maybe a title and a set of plates.  I was under it yesterday and notice that I must of bent one of the control arms in the rear.  I think it happen after I put on some non derby wheels.  It goes way faster this way   anyways I was hard on the pedal and thought it was way cool how hard it would pull and how sweet it felt each time i let the clutch in to second and third the rear brakes the tires loose, and wiggles around.  I figure that it must be the reason it bent.
